Federal Fuel Excise Tax Suspension – Effective April 20, 2026

On April 14, 2026, the Government of Canada announced a temporary suspension of the Federal Fuel Excise Tax (FET) on gasoline, diesel fuel, and aviation fuels. The suspension takes effect April 20, 2026, and will remain in place until September 7, 2026 (inclusive).

What is the Federal Fuel Excise Tax?

The Federal Fuel Excise Tax is a federal levy applied to certain fuels at the wholesale level and is typically embedded in fuel pricing.  This levy will be lifted during this temporary suspension period.

What This Means for McDougall Energy Customers

For McDougall Energy customers, the suspension means:

  • Fuel deliveries made on or after 12:01 a.m. on April 20, 2026 will no longer include Federal Fuel Excise Tax on applicable fuels.
  • Deliveries made before midnight on April 19, 2026, will continue to include the tax, in accordance with federal legislation.
  • The suspension applies to gasoline, diesel fuel, and aviation fuels
  • Heating oil, natural gas, and propane are not affected, as these fuels are already exempt from the federal excise tax.

What Happens After September 7, 2026?

Unless further changes are introduced, full federal excise tax rates are scheduled to return on September 8, 2026.
