FAQs

Why should I choose propane to heat my home?

Propane is a highly efficient and cost-effective home heating solution, delivering warmer air (120°F) than electric heat pumps and lasting nearly twice as long.

It also powers water heaters, fireplaces, stoves, and dryers more efficiently, reducing energy costs across multiple household appliances.

As an environmentally friendly option, propane produces fewer emissions than electricity, is lead-free, and does not contribute to acid rain.

Safe and reliable, propane is a stable, non-toxic fuel that offers homeowners warmth, savings, and sustainability.

What appliances can run on propane, and what are the benefits of switching?

Furnaces: Deliver warmer air (120°F) than electric heat pumps, last longer (20 vs. 12 years), and have lower repair costs.
Water Heaters: More cost-effective and heat water over twice as fast as electric models.
Fireplaces: 30–60% cheaper to run than wood, 40x fewer emissions, and offer easy on/off convenience with a real flame.
Cookstoves/Ovens: Instant heat and precise control—97% of professional chefs prefer cooking with gas.
Clothes Dryers: Dry faster (25% less time) and can save up to 65% in energy costs.

How does propane compare to electric heat?

Can propane save me money on other home appliances?

Is propane bad for the environment?

Propane is considered to be a cleaner fossil fuel for the following reasons:

Ozone-Friendly: Replaced harmful CFCs in refrigeration, helping to combat ozone depletion.
Safe & Non-Toxic: Doesn't harm humans, animals, or the environment if leaked.
Low Emissions: Lead-free, minimal sulphur, and produces less than half the greenhouse gases of electricity.
Cleaner Combustion: Emits 1/3 the hydrocarbons of gasoline, reducing air pollution.
Efficient Heating: Propane furnaces are 1.5x more efficient than oil furnaces, reducing fuel consumption and waste.

For more information about propane and the environment, visit the Propane Education & Research Council website.

How do I compare propane consumption to electricity usage?

3.79 litres of propane = 27 kWh (Kilowatt Hours) of electricity.

This means one gallon of propane contains the same amount of usable energy as 27 Kilowatt Hours. Or we can say that 27 kWh equals approximately 91,500 BTU.

Here is an example:
A 100-watt light bulb left on for a full day (24 hours) will consume 2.4 kWh. If propane were to power the same light bulb (hypothetically- remember, we’re comparing energy content) for 24 hours, it would use .34 litres of propane.

*To qualify for automatic delivery, a minimum annual usage of 1,500 litres is required on approved credit. Please note that the automatic delivery requirements are subject to change at the sole discretion of McDougall Energy Inc.
